Cold Knob 8-1-10

Back to Cold Knob looking for a parking spot for our friends from Beckly coming to ride the end of the month. It was cool and damp and by late afternoon the fog rolled in and you couldnt see 50 yards at times. They have opened up the old field road by removing the concrete barriers. We parked right under on the the windmills and it was eerie to see the tip of the blades appear from the fog as they turned. Kinda gave me the creeps :)    Anyway we got in  47 miles and were back home by 5:30.  It was a good weekend of riding and we may have to put the atvs away till we leave for MI in two weeks.

Damp, cool and foggy….but no dust

Hot Rod coming  up across the beaver dam crossing

The road to nowhere

Like a giant monster reaching down each time the blade came around…it  make me think of war of the worlds

Visibility was about 50 feet at times

Cold Knob 7-31-10

I had a rare saturday off so we decided to take a quick ride on Cold Knob. It was cool and overcast with a good chance of rain so we rode some gravel roads today. We rode over to Briery Knob and then down by the south branch of the Cherry. It was cool enough that we ended up having to put  rain suits on for warmth and then we ended up getting a light shower. Just enough to keep the dust down.
I saw 5 hawks before we even got 5 miles. I wonder if its young ones just off the nest. Also saw 2 small bucks and a couple does. No bear this trip.
The rain and fog finally drove us off the moutain so we headed back to the truck. We got in a total of 44 miles all on known paths we had ridden before. I did pick up a piece of wire in one of my back tires that I had to plug.   Looks like we might head back tomorrow :)

It was so foggy that the windmills would just appear out of the mist. Some of them all we could see was just the bases of them.

Another Sunday, Another Cold Knob ride

Jo and I had another great day on Cold Knob today. Started up the goat trail and headed over to Jo’s trail and got behind 5 guys on atvs. Seems the fellows we showed the trail to last week were showing it to some other riders. We managed to get around them and headed over to Cross Mountain to explore some more trails. I let Jo lead out the grade and she got a glimpse of another black bear as she rounded a bend in the road. Though it was 84 degrees at 10 am this morning with a good breeze and staying mostly to the shaded paths we had a fairly pleasant ride. We did find some new woods trails to explore and even though we took some long dead end paths we still had an enjoyable 50 mile ride. Members of the hunt club have made some great trails out on the south west end and we have really enjoyed exploring them. We kept hearing thunder in the distance..or so we thought…when we popped out of the trees into the open and discovered that a rain storm was almost upon us. Jo stopped at an intersection and by the time she said do you think we should put on our rain suits it was pouring the rain. I don’t know how much rain fell in the next few minutes but it was enough that we didn’t have to worry about dust all the way home. All in all another great day riding and even though the mountain is getting smaller as we become more familiar with it we are still finding new trails to ride.

Active logging going on

Cold Knob 7-19-10

Great day on the knob today. Found some new trails. One we would rate a solid blue and another I would consider a black trail due a couple particulary hairy sections. I learned a new position on my atv today. I was leaning so far forward I was holding on to the front bumper trying to keep the bike from flipping while using the throttle to keep from rolling back down a really steep bank….can you say pucker. Jo had visions of insurance settlement dancing in her head but I managed to recover and we both eventually made it over. We’ll save this trail for the more adventurous riders  :)    Of course no ride is complete without some trail maintence and the best thing was as we were coming home  we were passing thru the wide spot where Mr Ed was trying to pump his tire up when a big black bear run across the opening in front of me…..it was a good day  :)

Yeah the trail goes right thru all those big chunks of logs and no I didnt cut those with my little chainsaw.

More woods trails..I love it
