Back to Cold Knob looking for a parking spot for our friends from Beckly coming to ride the end of the month. It was cool and damp and by late afternoon the fog rolled in and you couldnt see 50 yards at times. They have opened up the old field road by removing the concrete barriers. We parked right under on the the windmills and it was eerie to see the tip of the blades appear from the fog as they turned. Kinda gave me the creeps Damp, cool and foggy….but no dust Hot Rod coming up across the beaver dam crossing The road to nowhere Like a giant monster reaching down each time the blade came around…it make me think of war of the worlds Visibility was about 50 feet at times
It was so foggy that the windmills would just appear out of the mist. Some of them all we could see was just the bases of them. Jo and I had another great day on Cold Knob today. Started up the goat trail and headed over to Jo’s trail and got behind 5 guys on atvs. Seems the fellows we showed the trail to last week were showing it to some other riders. We managed to get around them and headed over to Cross Mountain to explore some more trails. I let Jo lead out the grade and she got a glimpse of another black bear as she rounded a bend in the road. Though it was 84 degrees at 10 am this morning with a good breeze and staying mostly to the shaded paths we had a fairly pleasant ride. We did find some new woods trails to explore and even though we took some long dead end paths we still had an enjoyable 50 mile ride. Members of the hunt club have made some great trails out on the south west end and we have really enjoyed exploring them. We kept hearing thunder in the distance..or so we thought…when we popped out of the trees into the open and discovered that a rain storm was almost upon us. Jo stopped at an intersection and by the time she said do you think we should put on our rain suits it was pouring the rain. I don’t know how much rain fell in the next few minutes but it was enough that we didn’t have to worry about dust all the way home. All in all another great day riding and even though the mountain is getting smaller as we become more familiar with it we are still finding new trails to ride. Active logging going on Ultimate 4 wheeler The things we see ended up being a dead end but it was nice while it lasted Caught a glimpse of a nice buck over the embankment What views another dead end but still a pretty site no dust after this little toad choker http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/wv has free files to download for the garmin gps. Instead of paying Garmin 99 bucks for the 24k topo map of WV I was able to download one from this site for FREE. Great day on the knob today. Found some new trails. One we would rate a solid blue and another I would consider a black trail due a couple particulary hairy sections. I learned a new position on my atv today. I was leaning so far forward I was holding on to the front bumper trying to keep the bike from flipping while using the throttle to keep from rolling back down a really steep bank….can you say pucker. Jo had visions of insurance settlement dancing in her head but I managed to recover and we both eventually made it over. We’ll save this trail for the more adventurous riders Yeah the trail goes right thru all those big chunks of logs and no I didnt cut those with my little chainsaw. More woods trails..I love it Jo in a mudhole…image that Butterflies everywhere It says it all |
